Lake District, March 20th 2005
On March 20th 2005 I spent a day travelling round the Northern and Western Lake District, starting from M6 Junction 40 and working my way roughly westwards, stopping in various places along the way. The weather was beautiful, so I covered 240 miles and took around 120 photographs. The images below are grouped below into collections of images from each site or group of sites that I visited. Click the thumbnails to see the larger version. Feel free to use any of these as desktop wallpaper, or print them for your own use. No commercial use though please. If you'd like a larger version of any image, or even a print, drop me an email and I'll see what I can do. For definitions of photographic terms etc you can move your mouse pointer over the question mark symbol and the box that appears will hopefully clarify any questions. If not, then please email me or use the guestbook to tell me what needs further clarification.
Between M6J40 and Keswick
On the main road between the motorway and my first planned stop at Castlerigg Stone Circle, I kept passing lay-bys full of cars. Small wonder, as the scenery on both sides of the road was spectacular. I eventually found space in a layby and explored my immediate surroundings with the camera. I also experimented with panning the camera with passing cars to give a sense of movement and speed, and the best result is included below.
All the below pictures apart from the gate shot were taken from this location. The gate was found a few miles onwards towards Castlerigg. I climbed an almost adjacent metal gate to get an elevated viewpoint.

Castlerigg Stone Circle
Castlerigg Stone Circle sits on a hill above Keswick. It's one of my favourite locations for photography in the lake district just because of its hilltop situation. You can point a camera in just about any direction and be assured of impressive scenery in the background. On this particular day there weren't too many visitors around so I was able to eventually get most of the shots I wanted without anyone in them.

Derwent Water
I'd never been to Derwent Water before, so after parking up in Keswick, I crossed the National Trust owned Crow Park and was faced with a beautiful view of the lake. It was mid afternoon and the sun was starting to dip in the sky, and it was making the colours look almost monochrome.
